Son Heung-min: Spurs’ superhero seems to flourish when the pressure is on | Eni Aluko

It will be between Raheem Sterling and Virgil van Dijk for the player of the year awards. They would be in my top three along with Tottenham’s unsung South Korean

These have been a memorable few weeks for Tottenham. I have not been to their stadium but the images online look incredible and the Spurs supporters’ response to it has been extremely positive. In two games there they have two victories and they are yet to concede a goal. On Tuesday they took control of their Champions League quarter-final against Manchester City, with Son Heung-min scoring another vital goal.

Ilkay Gündogan has offered a scathing assessment of Manchester City’s mentality in the Champions League, describing them as too nervous, too error-prone and too vulnerable to setbacks.

Gündogan started the 1-0 defeat by Tottenham in the quarter-final on Tuesday – a first-leg performance he felt was marked by over-eagerness and things that “must not happen to a big team”. Sergio Agüero missed an early penalty at Spurs before Son Heung-min scored the winner in the 78th minute.

Pep Guardiola last won a big European away game in 2011. Is he overthinking? | Jonathan Wilson

Guardian - ons, 10/04/2019 - 11:30

Manchester City’s loss at Spurs took his run without a quarter- or semi-final victory to 10 games. It feels more than a blip

Eight years ago Pepe was sent off and Lionel Messi scored two goals, one of them brilliant, as Barcelona beat Real Madrid in the semi-final of the Champions League. It was an apocalyptic night, the climax of that run of four clásicos in 17 days (although there was the second leg still to come) that came to define José Mourinho’s first season in Spain.

It came after Guardiola had finally snapped back at Mourinho’s constant goading, a moment his players seem to have regarded as the lancing of a boil. It was an exhausting, euphoric victory and yet one from which Guardiola has perhaps never quite recovered: eight years on, he is yet to win another away leg of a Champions League quarter-final or semi-final.

Supercharged Son jolts City to show Spurs can prosper without Kane

Guardian - ons, 10/04/2019 - 01:26
The South Korean is quicker and more likely to dribble or power on behind the last defender and it may suit Tottenham to have him as their main striker in Manchester

Who needs Harry Kane anyway? This is not an entirely serious question. The correct answer is, of course every club team in elite European football. But not always Tottenham Hotspur. As Kane limped off after 55 minutes of this Champions League quarter-final Mauricio Pochettino’s team were once again asked to perform without their star and leading scorer. And once again they did exactly that.

Spurs had unveiled their new pre-match montage before kick-off, a film narrated by Sir Kenneth Branagh, who said stirring things in a clipped voice over footage of misty Spursy moments. The south stand held up its wall of plastic bags to spell out To Dare Is To Do, an iconic image so iconic the Spurs media department had already called it iconic before it had even happened.
