Premier League: 10 talking points from the weekend’s action

Guardian - man, 02/10/2017 - 09:33

Everton’s defence has gone walkabout, Swansea and Southampton are serving up stodgy fare and Antonio Conte may rue being in a tougher league than Serie A

Chris Hughton, the Brighton & Hove Albion manager, said it all when he highlighted how his team had not been “out of sight” against Arsenal, just as they had not been against Manchester City on the opening weekend of the season. On both occasions, the final scoreline of 0-2 hinted at respectability. Which, in truth, was Brighton’s priority. The gap to the Premier League’s top six clubs yawns like a chasm and Hughton’s approach at the Emirates Stadium – an approach born out of necessity – was characterised by damage limitation. Hughton used a 4-5-1 system and, even after Nacho Monreal’s early opener, Brighton did not come out. Their lack of firepower remains a worry. It was the fourth time in seven league matches that they had drawn a blank. However, their season will not be defined by away games like this. David Hytner

Mauricio Pochettino expects Harry Kane to ensure he needs more superlatives | Paul Doyle

Guardian - søn, 01/10/2017 - 23:30
The Tottenham manager saw his in-form forward help to dismantle Huddersfield but believes the best is to come because ‘players will get mature when 26, 27’

On top of everything else Harry Kane is giving Mauricio Pochettino regular English language workouts. The Argentinian said after watching the striker score another two goals in Tottenham Hotspur’s authoritative 4-0 win at Huddersfield Town that it is a welcome challenge to keep finding new words to describe Kane’s excellence. The manager, in turn, intends to keep challenging Kane – because he says the player who is aiming to win the Premier League’s golden boot award for a third consecutive season has plenty of improving to do.

“The moment you stop to work, you start to go down,” Pochettino says. “Now it is our job to try keep pushing, working. He is only 24 and for me players will get mature when you are 26, 27 – that is your best. Now I think he is about to keep going, keep pushing to improve and to learn. With more experience, he will be much, much better.”

England’s Gareth Southgate energised by Pochettino’s Spurs fitness regime

Guardian - lør, 30/09/2017 - 23:30
Dramatic improvements in strength and stamina of Harry Kane and Tottenham team-mates is infusing England with hope despite the usual burnout fears

Gareth Southgate believes England can profit from the fitness regime Mauricio Pochettino has introduced at Tottenham, with all the Spurs players in the national squad showing marked improvements in strength and stamina over the past couple of years. Until now the Argentinian’s major contribution to England World Cup hopes was to leave his left leg dangling for Michael Owen to trip over in Sapporo in 2002, but Southgate insists his training methods speak for themselves.

Even when Pochettino was at Southampton, who also employed his present assistant, Jesús Pérez, Southgate noticed the Saints players in his under-21 squads showed similar fitness gains. “Mauricio and Jesús are on to something,” Southgate says as he prepares for the internationals against Slovenia and Lithuania. “We see a definite difference in their players’ fitness levels. It’s what allows them to play the pressing game they like to play. It was the same with Southampton, you could see the impact on the players from their club training.”
